I may be wrong but I don't think I am, the FDA does not define extra virgin olive oil. Their standards are circa 1948, long before "extra virgin" meant anything to most Americans. The FDA is only concerned that the product is pure olive oil which can then be called "extra virgin" in America. This means corporations can mix all grades of olive oil, pomace, virgin, evoo, etc. and still call the finished product "extra virgin". This is why the California Olive Oil Council has instituted their own standards even though these standards do not carry any weight with the FDA at this time. The reason the feds crack down on the counterfeiters is because they are adulterating pure olive oil (regardless of the grade) with seed oils, or worse.

Really? I am rather surprised that companies would go thru all the trouble of rebottling, relabeling etc. It seems almost too much work to gain the profit. Regardless, this is great info. OK, where can we get a list of the "true" manufacturers?
