The Med Mag Oliva International Exhibition of Olive, Olive Oil and Derivatives of the Olive Tree will be presenting its third edition this June in Sousse, Tunisia. Held from June 11 to 14, 2015 at the Sousse International Center, the theme of this year’s edition of the fair is “science and technology in the service of olive growing.“
This is Tunisia’s biggest event related to the olive oil sector, with the main objectives being to promote commercial exchanges, share production technologies and foster partnerships between suppliers.
The international exhibition will include a competition, a symposium, and workshops in sensory analysis and olive oil tasting, and on certification and quality assurance.
The 2015 edition will take place in the context of Tunisia’s record olive season. During the most recent olive harvest, yields had increased fourfold compared to the previous season, reaching an estimated 280,000 to 300,000 tons, putting Tunisia in second place after Spain.
Though this North African country is a major producer of olive oil, only a small percentage is consumed domestically, with 60 to 70 percent of Tunisian olive oil exported to the European Union, mainly to Spain and Italy. Other export markets include the United States, Canada, France, Russia and China.
Local producers hope to further increase production and quality and ultimately boost olive oil exports which currently represent 40 percent of the country’s agricultural exports and 10 percent of total exports.
