The susÂpects in Thessaloniki were caught fillÂing conÂtainÂers with colÂored soyÂbean oil, while the susÂpect in Athens used physÂiÂcal vioÂlence to sell fake olive oil to busiÂnessÂmen, leadÂing to mulÂtiÂple fraud cases in both indusÂtries.
Greek police made sevÂeral arrests related to two sepÂaÂrate olive oil fraud rings in the counÂtry’s two largest cities.
Olive Oil Theft Ring in Thessaloniki
Four susÂpects are accused of tryÂing to sell soyÂbean oil mixed with colÂorants as extra virÂgin olive oil in the town of Kilkis located just outÂside of Thessaloniki.
Law enforceÂment offiÂcials from the Kilkis and Paeonia Doiranis police departÂments colÂlabÂoÂrated on the invesÂtiÂgaÂtion and manÂaged to catch the susÂpects in the act after they filled five-liter plasÂtic conÂtainÂers with colÂored soyÂbean oil and tried to sell them to unsusÂpectÂing buyÂers. The susÂpects, aged 18, 23, 24, and 40, attempted to sell 1,000 liters of the soyÂbean oil for more than 2,500 euros.

Officers charged them with fraud and they will appear before a court in Veria. The Greek Department of Commerce seized the oil to conÂduct a forÂmal chemÂiÂcal analyÂsis. The susÂpects apparÂently used varÂiÂous dyes to color the soyÂbean oil, makÂing it appear as extra virÂgin olive oil.
Arrest in Athens
In a sepÂaÂrate case, Greek police arrested a 39-year-old accused of sellÂing fake olive oil in Athens. The arrest was part of a three-month invesÂtiÂgaÂtion into an olive oil fraud ring in the Ano Liosia, Aspropyrgou and Zephr disÂtricts of the capÂiÂtal.
According to varÂiÂous news reports, the susÂpect placed ads attractÂing busiÂnessÂmen to buy extra virÂgin olive oil. Once the busiÂnessÂmen agreed to buy the olive oil over the phone they were lead to varÂiÂous wareÂhouses to comÂplete the deal. In some cases, the susÂpect used physÂiÂcal vioÂlence when the busiÂnessÂmen became susÂpiÂcious. Police say the susÂpect is involved in eight olive oil fraud cases, as well as sevÂeral fraud cases in the Greek furÂniÂture indusÂtry.
