The International Olive Council has released three papers ahead of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils meetÂing in Malaysia, aimÂing to harÂmoÂnize interÂnaÂtional stanÂdards for olive oils. The papers address disÂcrepÂanÂcies between Codex and IOC stanÂdards, parÂticÂuÂlarly regardÂing campesÂterol and delta-7-stigÂmasÂtenol criÂteÂria for olive oil purity and authenÂticÂity.
In prepaÂraÂtion for the 24th sesÂsion of the Codex Committee on Fats and Oils, meetÂing this week in Melaka, Malaysia, the International Olive Council (IOC) has proÂduced three papers which it has made pubÂlic on its webÂsite.
Codex Alimentarius is an interÂnaÂtional food stanÂdards body which draws up worldÂwide stanÂdards, guideÂlines and codes of pracÂtice in order to proÂtect conÂsumer health and ensure fair pracÂtices in the food trade. Its Committee on Fats and Oils is responÂsiÂble for the interÂnaÂtional stanÂdards for fats and oils of aniÂmal, vegÂetable and marine oriÂgin, includÂing marÂgarine and olive oil.
The IOC has been workÂing closely with the Committee to achieve harÂmoÂnizaÂtion of the Codex stanÂdards for olive oils and olive pomace oils with the IOC’s own stanÂdards for these prodÂucts. These stanÂdards define qualÂity and purity criÂteÂria for olive oils and olive pomace oils and specÂify how these criÂteÂria should be assessed with the aim to safeÂguard olive oil qualÂity, preÂvent adulÂterÂation and satÂisfy defÂiÂnÂiÂtions.
It was unclear whether IOC repÂreÂsenÂtaÂtives were attendÂing the Malaysia meetÂing. Lack of funds preÂvented IOC direcÂtor Jean-Louis Barjol from attendÂing the 2013 meetÂing of the Codex Fats and Oils comÂmitÂtee.
At the moment disÂcrepÂanÂcies exist between the stanÂdards of the two orgaÂniÂzaÂtions. At the upcomÂing meetÂing, two criÂteÂria used to deterÂmine the purity and authenÂticÂity of olive oil will be disÂcussed: campesÂterol and delta-7-stigÂmasÂtenol. These are phyÂtosÂterols whose chemÂiÂcal strucÂture is simÂiÂlar to that of choÂlesÂterol.
The three papers have been preÂpared by the IOC at the request of Codex and will be disÂcussed at the meetÂing. Two of these outÂline the results of the IOC’s own studÂies carÂried out on campesÂterol (PDF) and delta-7-stigÂmasÂtenol (PDF). The third is a response (PDF) by the IOC to a proÂposal by Australia to increase the limÂits of campesÂterol and delta-7-stigÂmasÂtenol.
IOC memÂbers are conÂcerned that these proÂposed increases would make the posÂsiÂbilÂity of fraud detecÂtion more difÂfiÂcult. They recÂomÂmend disÂcussing conÂcluÂsions that the IOC has reached based on an invesÂtiÂgaÂtion of the testÂing results of samÂples supÂplied by proÂducÂing counÂtries which have led to the adopÂtion of an IOC stanÂdard.
The docÂuÂment proÂposes that Codex harÂmoÂnize its stanÂdards with those of the IOC as well as the methÂods for meaÂsurÂing criÂteÂria. They also invite memÂbers of Codex to attend the meetÂings of the IOC chemÂistry experts as observers and parÂticÂiÂpate in an elecÂtronic workÂing group examÂinÂing these quesÂtions.
