Ahead of taking the chair position for the 2019 IOC Council of Members meeting, Egypt's Agriculture Minister pledges more cooperation and investment in the country's already substantial olive sector.
Egypt’s Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced plans for Egypt to become the world’s top table olive proÂducer by the end of the next decade, aimÂing to plant 100 milÂlion new olive trees by 2020 to achieve this goal. The Minister disÂcussed increasÂing coopÂerÂaÂtion with Spain and Tunisia in olive culÂtiÂvaÂtion and research, with a focus on comÂbatÂing deserÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtion and cliÂmate change chalÂlenges.

Egypt has a plan to increase the proÂducÂtion and culÂtiÂvaÂtion of olives in desert lands.- Ezz el-Din Abu Steit, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation
Ezz el-Din Abu Steit made that stateÂment in Madrid last month after comÂpletÂing bilatÂeral meetÂings with his Spanish counÂterÂpart, Luis Planas on the sideÂlines of the International Olive Council’s (IOC) annual meetÂing.
The two reportÂedly disÂcussed increasÂing coopÂerÂaÂtion between Spain and Egypt in olive culÂtiÂvaÂtion, as well as on other agriÂculÂtural projects.
Egypt is curÂrently the world’s secÂond largest proÂducer of table olives after Spain. According to the most recent figÂures made availÂable by the IOC, Egypt proÂduced 450,000 tons of table olives in the 2018/19 crop year. Spain proÂduced a world-record 613,000 tons.
While this was a record year for Spain, Egypt’s table olive yield dropped by about 100,000 tons, from their record high 2016/17 yield.
However, Egypt’s table olive proÂducÂtion conÂtinÂues to trend upward. The averÂage of the past three harÂvests, 500,000 tons, is higher than any preÂviÂous year and this trend is likely to conÂtinue.
Abu Steit said that Egypt plans to plant about 100 milÂlion new olive trees by 2020 in a bid to meet this goal. He has invited Planas to come and tour the country’s olive groves as well, hopÂing to excite the Spanish agriÂculÂtural minÂisÂter about the potenÂtial for investÂment.
“Abu Steit invited Planas to visit Egypt and get acquainted with its potenÂtials to proÂmote the culÂtiÂvaÂtion of olives,” a stateÂment on the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation’s offiÂcial webÂsite said.
“For his part, the Spanish minÂisÂter welÂcomed the inviÂtaÂtion and called for outÂlinÂing a memÂoÂranÂdum of underÂstandÂing to boost coopÂerÂaÂtion in the agriÂculÂtural field.”
There has been no pubÂlic menÂtion about what might be agreed to in the memÂoÂranÂdum of underÂstandÂing.
While in Madrid, Abu Steit also met with Tunisia’s Agriculture Minister, Samir Taieb, in order to disÂcuss increasÂing coopÂerÂaÂtion between the two counÂtries. During the 2018/19 crop year Tunisia proÂduced 25,000 tons of table olives.
“Abu Steit probed with [Taieb] means of fosÂterÂing coopÂerÂaÂtion between the two counÂtries’ priÂvate secÂtors in olive oil proÂducÂtion, in addiÂtion to exchangÂing expeÂriÂence in the research area,” the stateÂment said.
Some of the research that two counÂtries will likely share is how to deal with the increasÂing strains caused by cliÂmate change. According to preÂdicÂtive modÂels from cliÂmate sciÂenÂtists, North Africa will conÂtinue to become hotÂter and drier over time, espeÂcially if the Earth’s carÂbon emisÂsions are not curÂtailed in time.
The region’s deserÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtion will also likely be a topic of conÂverÂsaÂtion in April when Egypt hosts the next meetÂing of the IOC. The Egyptian govÂernÂment has already begun investÂing in new irriÂgaÂtion sysÂtems for olive groves that are being planted in the country’s westÂern desert.
“Egypt has a plan to increase the proÂducÂtion and culÂtiÂvaÂtion of olives in desert lands,” Abu Steit said before leavÂing Madrid.
The hope is that by growÂing olive trees here, the Egyptian govÂernÂment can stop the spread of deserÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtion in the Nile River Delta.
