Members of the Turkish Olive Oil Promotion Committee parÂticÂiÂpated in the Food Hospitality World in Mumbai to increase Turkey’s marÂket share, with the Turkish Consulate General in Mumbai proÂvidÂing visÂiÂbilÂity through social media. Despite low olive oil conÂsumpÂtion in India, the Committee aims to develop the marÂket long-term, with Turkey tarÂgetÂing to proÂduce 650,000 tons of olive oil by 2023 and lookÂing to India as a key export marÂket.
Members of Turkish Olive Oil Promotion Committee (ZZTK) took part in the Food Hospitality World, held in Mumbai from January 22 to 24 with the aim of growÂing Turkey’s marÂket share of the huge marÂket.
The Turkish Consulate General in Mumbai gave high visÂiÂbilÂity to this parÂticÂiÂpaÂtion, postÂing on its Facebook page picÂtures of the Turkish delÂeÂgaÂtion in the fair offerÂing preÂsenÂtaÂtions on the qualÂiÂties of Turkish olive oil.
The chairÂman of the Turkish Olive Oil Promotion Committee, Kadri GündeÅŸ, stressed the high potenÂtial of Indian marÂket, adding that Turkey pays great attenÂtion to it.
Last year India imported a meaÂger 11,000 tons of olive oil, accordÂing to Rajneesh Bhasin, manÂagÂing direcÂtor at Borges India and presÂiÂdent of the Indian Olive Oil Association and this numÂber may remain flat in 2015, because of high duties on import and the genÂeral rise of olive oil prices in interÂnaÂtional marÂkets.
Indians conÂsume on averÂage less than one teaÂspoon per year, but the rate is inchÂing upward as more become conÂcerned by the health costs assoÂciÂated with the unhealthy seed oils comÂmonly used in traÂdiÂtional Indian cookÂing.

But the unfaÂvorÂable curÂrent sitÂuÂaÂtion doesn’t disÂcourÂage GündeÅŸ who stressed that Turkey’s ambiÂtions in the Indian marÂkets are not short-term. Indeed the secÂtor in Turkey is develÂopÂing to achieve a goal of proÂducÂing 650,000 tons of olive oil in 2023, the 100th anniverÂsary of the founÂdaÂtion of the Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
That enorÂmous quanÂtity will need to find new marÂkets to gain a proper value added and the Committee (ZZTK) is lookÂing to India, with its more than 1 bilÂlion posÂsiÂble conÂsumers, as an opporÂtuÂnity to increase Turkish exports for the future, startÂing with this difÂfiÂcult year.
