The International Olive Council reports that global olive oil proÂducÂtion for the 2015/2016 seaÂson is estiÂmated to be over 3.225 milÂlion tons, a 33 perÂcent increase from the preÂviÂous seaÂson. Spain and Italy have had strong seaÂsons, while Tunisia, Turkey, Israel, Albania, and Lebanon are expeÂriÂencÂing a decrease in proÂducÂtion.
According to the latÂest proÂducÂtion figÂures released by the International Olive Council (IOC), world olive oil outÂput for the 2015/2016 seaÂson has been betÂter than iniÂtially expected. This year’s total, estiÂmated to exceed 3.225 milÂlion tons, will come close to the record 3.271 milÂlion tons proÂduced in the 2013/2014 proÂducÂtion seaÂson.
This year’s global outÂput is 33 perÂcent higher than the preÂviÂous seaÂson, repÂreÂsentÂing an increase of 790,500 tons.
The world’s largest olive oil proÂducÂers, Spain and Italy, have had a strong seaÂson with a 65 perÂcent increase in proÂducÂtion for Spain, and a 112 perÂcent increase for Italy comÂpared to the 2014/2015 seaÂson which was the worst expeÂriÂenced by both counÂtries in the past two decades. Greece has also seen a slight increase of 3 perÂcent, while Portugal is poised for a 65 perÂcent rise in proÂducÂtion.
A few olive oil proÂducÂing counÂtries outÂside the European Union like Algeria, Morocco, Libya, and Egypt will have only slight increases, with the most sigÂnifÂiÂcant figÂures comÂing from Argentina, which has seen a 317 perÂcent boost in its proÂducÂtion. Modestly higher results were noted in Iran (30 perÂcent) and Jordan (26 perÂcent).
Meanwhile, a few counÂtries have expeÂriÂenced a decrease in proÂducÂtion, notably Tunisia with 59 perÂcent less than last year, which was a record proÂducÂtion for the North African counÂtry. Turkey, Israel, Albania, and Lebanon are also expeÂriÂencÂing a decline in olive oil proÂducÂtion for the 2015/2016 seaÂson.
