The suspects used a dye to alter the color of the sunflower oil to appear like olive oil.
Seven peoÂple in Thessaly, Greece were arrested for sellÂing adulÂterÂated sunÂflower oil as extra virÂgin olive oil at half the marÂket price, with the operÂaÂtion based in a workÂshop near Larissa. The susÂpects face charges of defraudÂing the state, issuÂing false docÂuÂments, and money launÂderÂing, with authorÂiÂties seizÂing a total of 17 tons of the fake oil.
Seven peoÂple have been arrested yesÂterÂday in the Greek province of Thessaly folÂlowÂing allegedly fraudÂuÂlent sales of adulÂterÂated sunÂflower oil, accordÂing to reports. Their prodÂucts were passed off as being extra virÂgin olive oil sold for half the marÂket price, claimÂing to be directly from the proÂducÂers.
Operating out of a workÂshop near the city of Larissa which is located in the northÂern province of Thessaly, the oil had been sold both locally and abroad.
The four famÂily memÂbers along with three other relÂaÂtives were charged with defraudÂing the state, issuÂing false docÂuÂments and money launÂderÂing. Authorities said they were also involved in crimÂiÂnal gang activÂiÂties. The prosÂeÂcuÂtor’s office conÂfirmed that all seven involved in the operÂaÂtion will be present in court later this week to undergo furÂther quesÂtionÂing by the magÂisÂtrate.
The oil was packÂaged into palÂlets, each weighÂing a ton, before being exported. Five tons of unpackÂaged oil had already been seized as well as another 12 tons which were just about to be exported.
The seven made use of a workÂshop where a fleet of luxÂury vehiÂcles led to the charges of money launÂderÂing, accordÂing to the Washington Post.
In the workÂshop, they used a dye to alter the color of the yelÂlow sunÂflower oil to take on a green color to appear like genÂuine olive oil. The adulÂterÂated oil was being sold for under €15 as opposed to averÂage retail prices which range from €26 to €30 for a 5‑liter drum of olive oil.
The Hellenic Food Authority (HFA) is responÂsiÂble for setÂting qualÂity stanÂdards for the proÂtecÂtion of pubÂlic health and the preÂvenÂtion of fraudÂuÂlent pracÂtices. The authorÂity became aware of the sales of these unadulÂterÂated oils back in 2015 when it was first reported by local olive oil proÂducÂers who disÂcovÂered that their codes were being used on brands which they had neiÂther proÂduced nor sold.
Officials who conÂducted the HFA invesÂtiÂgaÂtion claimed that the dye was anaÂlyzed and found to be a prodÂuct which is easÂily availÂable and safe to use. However, it was menÂtioned that the iniÂtial dye used in the operÂaÂtion conÂtained carÂcinoÂgenic subÂstances.
Prior to the recent arrest, police had taken in as many as 60 peoÂple who were caught up in operÂaÂtions which involved sellÂing the fake prodÂucts. At that stage, a wareÂhouse in Thessaloniki was also raided and found to be used for packÂagÂing of the goods. The workÂshop raided on Sunday has since been idenÂtiÂfied as the main operÂaÂtion.
