Five major agriÂculÂtural orgaÂniÂzaÂtions in Spain have called for strikes and protests in 97 municÂiÂpalÂiÂties in JaĂ©n on February 24 to demand fair prices for olive oil and supÂport for traÂdiÂtional olive groves, folÂlowÂing the sucÂcess of a preÂviÂous protest that resulted in a meetÂing with the agriÂculÂture minÂisÂter. The orgaÂniÂzaÂtions, includÂing UPA and COAG, are hopÂing that these protests will lead to more govÂernÂment conÂcesÂsions and presÂsure on Brussels for aid.
Five of Spain’s main agriÂculÂtural orgaÂniÂzaÂtions announced a masÂsive day of strikes and protests across the province of JaĂ©n for February 24.
The orgaÂniÂzaÂtions want proÂtesÂtors to gather in the town squares of 97 municÂiÂpalÂiÂties across the province to demand fair prices for olive oil and more supÂport for traÂdiÂtional olive groves.
The orgaÂniÂzaÂtions have been emboldÂened by the sucÂcess of an earÂlier protest in JaĂ©n in which four highÂways were blocked by olive growÂers and oil proÂducÂers. These protests resulted in a meetÂing between the orgaÂniÂzaÂtions and Luis Planas, the minÂisÂter of agriÂculÂture, food and fishÂeries.
The Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers (UPA), the Association of Young Farmers and Ranchers (Asaja), the Coordinator of Agriculture and Livestock Organizations (COAG), the Agri-food Cooperatives of Andalusia and the Spanish Federation of Industrial Olive Oil Manufacturers put out the call to action on Monday.
They hope that furÂther protests and disÂrupÂtions will lead to more conÂcesÂsions from the Spanish govÂernÂment and addiÂtional presÂsure on Brussels for aid.
