Spanish researchers from the University of Seville found that extra virÂgin olive oil and its polypheÂnol extracts have a posÂiÂtive effect on colÂiÂtis, a conÂdiÂtion charÂacÂterÂized by inflamÂmaÂtion of the large intesÂtine. The study, pubÂlished in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, showed that these subÂstances improved sympÂtoms and reduced inflamÂmaÂtion in labÂoÂraÂtory aniÂmals with severe chronic colÂiÂtis, sugÂgestÂing they could be used as a funcÂtional food for this disÂease.
In a recent study, Spanish researchers from the University of Seville observed a posÂiÂtive effect of extra virÂgin olive oil on colÂiÂtis. Colitis is a conÂdiÂtion charÂacÂterÂized by inflamÂmaÂtion of the large intesÂtine causÂing many and often painful gasÂtroinÂtestiÂnal sympÂtoms. Ulcerative colÂiÂtis is a form of colÂiÂtis that affects the linÂing of the large intesÂtine and its presÂence increases the risk of colon canÂcer. The cause of it is unknown but may be related to the immune sysÂtem.
For this study pubÂlished in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, the researchers tested the effects of extra virÂgin olive oil as well as extra virÂgin olive oil polypheÂnol extracts on labÂoÂraÂtory aniÂmals induced with colÂiÂtis that proÂgressed to severe chronic colÂiÂtis.
The researchers evalÂuÂated the Disease activÂity index (DAI) a series of meaÂsureÂments of sympÂtoms, and also deterÂmined inflamÂmaÂtion of the intesÂtine by hisÂtoÂlogÂiÂcal and bioÂchemÂiÂcal analyÂsis. The results showed that theÂexÂtra virÂgin olive oil and EVOO+extra virÂgin olive oil polypheÂnol extracts both had a sigÂnifÂiÂcant posÂiÂtive effect on sevÂeral proÂteins involved in the disÂease with less hisÂtoÂlogÂiÂcal signs of damÂage comÂpared to a stanÂdard diet. In addiÂtion, there was a much higher reducÂtion of iNOS, an enzyme that is expressed durÂing inflamÂmaÂtory reacÂtions with theÂexÂtra virÂgin olive oil enriched with polypheÂnol extracts.
The researchers conÂcluded that extra virÂgin olive oil and its polypheÂnol extracts could improve chronic colÂiÂtis, but also could be used as a funcÂtional food for this disÂease.
