Andalucían Olive Oil Producer Courts Booming Chinese Market at Shanghai’s 2010 Expo
This year’s Shanghai World Expo is expected to attract some 70 million visitors from China and abroad and olive oil producers from every part of the globe are sending products to court a Chinese market whose olive oil imports have grown over 60% annually since 2001.
Olivar de Segura, an industry leader from Andalucía, Spain, the world’s largest olive oil producing region in the world, will participate in the Expo as part of an international marketing mission looking to suss out the emerging Asian olive oil market. The commercial mission of the trip, organized by the Andalucían ministry of Tourism, Commerce, and Sport, is to analyze business opportunities in the Chinese market at present.
Olivar de Segura is a co-operative devoted to the production, sales and packaging of extra virgin olive oil bearing the Sierra de Segura Denomination of Origin. The company hopes to stand out in a competitive international marketing campaign which has seen olive oils flown in from all over the globe.

Luciano Alonso, the head adviser at the Andalucían ministry, will preside over the visit which is set to coincide with an Andalucían themed week at the Expo. Alonso, together with his ministry staff, will hope to facilitate the introduction of Spanish olive oil brands that have yet to penetrate the Chinese market as well as consolidate the position of existing brands that are in tight competition with oils from Greece, Italy, Turkey, Tunisia, Portugal, Jordan, and Australia.
During 2009, the Andalucían region was Spain’s leading olive oil exporter to China with food and agricultural exports totaling some 31.5 million Euros. From January to April of this year alone, Andalucían exports have jumped another 10%.
