The controversial technology behind cryptocurrencies is at the core of a new project driven by IBM and other players in Spain's olive oil sector to guarantee the traceability of extra virgin olive oils.
Galpagro and IBM Spain have partÂnered to use blockchain techÂnolÂogy to trace extra virÂgin olive oil proÂducÂtion from the tree to the conÂsumer, with the project Olive Trace debutÂing in the 2018/19 harÂvest camÂpaign in Seville. This iniÂtiaÂtive aims to proÂvide conÂsumers with detailed inforÂmaÂtion about the oriÂgin and proÂducÂtion process of olive oil, while also addressÂing the demands of conÂsumer orgaÂniÂzaÂtions in Spain for greater transÂparency in food labelÂing.
Galpagro, a pioÂneerÂing comÂpany focused on high yield olive groves, and IBM Spain have joined forces on an iniÂtiaÂtive that uses blockchain techÂnolÂogy to trace all stages of extra virÂgin olive oil proÂducÂtion and disÂtriÂbÂuÂtion, from the olive tree to the conÂsumer.
This techÂnolÂogy applied to olive oil is a great opporÂtuÂnity to give full conÂfiÂdence to the conÂsumer on what type of oil is being purÂchased.- Ricardo DomĂnguez, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of Andalusia
The project, Olive Trace, debuted in the 2018/19 harÂvest camÂpaign at Finca El Valenciano in Seville where some of the estate’s plots will be the founÂdaÂtion of the first limÂited proÂducÂtion extra virÂgin olive oil with a full blockchain tracÂing.
The oil is expected to hit the marÂket this year.

Producers want to conÂvince the EU to make the incorÂpoÂraÂtion of detailed inforÂmaÂtion about the oriÂgin of fresh and manÂuÂfacÂtured prodÂucts mandaÂtory on all prodÂuct labels.
This would respond to conÂsumers’ increasÂingly obsesÂsive demands for details about the oriÂgin, authenÂticÂity, conÂtent and health benÂeÂfits of the food prodÂucts they eat, such as olive oil, and even the proÂducÂt’s enviÂronÂmenÂtal friendÂliÂness.
“This techÂnolÂogy applied to olive oil is a great opporÂtuÂnity to give full conÂfiÂdence to the conÂsumer on what type of oil is being purÂchased,” Ricardo DomĂnguez, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Rural Development of Andalusia, told Coin Telegraph.
Blockchain is a secure digÂiÂtal regÂisÂter that records transÂacÂtions into blocks, which are then copied across comÂputer netÂworks that allow them to be shared. Through an encrypted data platÂform regÂisÂtered in an inviÂoÂlable chain, Olive Trace will proÂvide detailed inforÂmaÂtion of actors and transÂacÂtions involved in each stage of the extra virÂgin olive oil proÂducÂtion process.
After scanÂning a QR code, anyÂone with access to the blockchain will be able to see all the inforÂmaÂtion about their extra virÂgin olive oil using an app. This app will allow them to have details about all transÂacÂtions, from harÂvestÂing on the olive farm to placeÂment on the superÂmarÂket shelf, includÂing the process of cerÂtiÂfiÂcaÂtions. This will reinÂforce users’ trust through enhanced traceÂabilÂity.
Now, users will have details about the exact locaÂtion where the olive trees are grown, the olive variÂety, olive pressÂing in the mill, oil makÂing, packÂing and disÂtriÂbÂuÂtion, until the oil reaches national and interÂnaÂtional conÂsumers. Every actor engaged in the proÂducÂtion and sellÂing processes will also be visÂiÂble and transÂparÂent.
The sysÂtem is, thereÂfore, interÂestÂing not only to conÂsumers, but also olive growÂers, oil proÂducÂers, packÂers and exporters.
IBM has been focusÂing on the food secÂtor to proÂmote projects that incorÂpoÂrate blockchain techÂnolÂogy. In the case of olive oil, blockchain helps to assure its qualÂity, oriÂgin, healthÂiÂness, and also works to avoid oil fraud.
This would also supÂport the proÂducÂtion process makÂing it easÂier for proÂducÂers, espeÂcially small proÂducÂers, to optiÂmize operÂaÂtions and to manÂage workÂload, human resources, stock, logisÂtics and costs more effiÂciently and with fewer interÂmeÂdiÂaries.
Last May, Spain’s olive secÂtor also saw the launchÂing of Olivacoin, a comÂpany that creÂated a hardÂware to hanÂdle price volatilÂity and qualÂity conÂtrol and proÂvide a payÂment platÂform for buyÂers and sellÂers of olive oil, using crypÂtocurÂrency based on food blockchain traceÂabilÂity.
