Palestine, a land where olives have been cultivated for thousands of years, signs the 2015 International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives, becoming the IOC's newest member.
Palestine became the 14th memÂber of the International Olive Council on April 9, 2017, after ratÂiÂfyÂing the 2015 International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives, with Ambassador Odeh thankÂing IOC staff for the welÂcome and emphaÂsizÂing the olive tree’s sigÂnifÂiÂcance as a symÂbol of peace. The occaÂsion was marked by the hoistÂing of the Palestinian flag at the IOC headÂquarÂters, highÂlightÂing the chalÂlenges faced by Palestinian olive farmÂers, who have been culÂtiÂvatÂing olives for thouÂsands of years, includÂing difÂfiÂculÂties in zones under Israeli milÂiÂtary conÂtrol and the impact of uprooted and damÂaged olive trees by Israeli setÂtlers.
Palestine was added as a memÂber of the International Olive Council (IOC) on April 9, 2017, bringÂing the total numÂber of IOC memÂbers to 14 (the European Union is counted as one memÂber).
The State of Palestine became a memÂber of the IOC (a United Nations orgaÂniÂzaÂtion) folÂlowÂing its ratÂiÂfiÂcaÂtion of the 2015 International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives.
To comÂmemÂoÂrate the event, Abdellatif Ghedira, the execÂuÂtive direcÂtor of the IOC, welÂcomed Musa Amer Odeh, the ambasÂsador of Palestine to Spain to IOC headÂquarÂters with other IOC staff and ambasÂsadors and diploÂmats from Oman, Tunisia, Algeria, Qatar, Jordan, and the Arab League.
Ambassador Odeh thanked IOC staff for the welÂcome and reminded those present of the olive tree’s sigÂnifÂiÂcance as a uniÂverÂsal symÂbol of peace. The occaÂsion was marked by the hoistÂing of the Palestinian flag at IOC headÂquarÂters next to the flags of the other IOC memÂber counÂtries.

Palestine had been seekÂing memÂberÂship to the IOC since 2013 when its appliÂcaÂtion was blocked by Germany and the United Kingdom because of conÂcerns that it could disÂrupt Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Under the conÂdiÂtions of the talks, Palestine was asked to not join any UN orgaÂniÂzaÂtions or address the International Criminal Court in The Hague in exchange for Israel’s release of Palestinian prisÂonÂers.
Olives have been culÂtiÂvated in Palestine for thouÂsands of years and are a major agriÂculÂtural crop. Palestinian olive farmÂers have faced difÂfiÂcult chalÂlenges in zones under Israeli milÂiÂtary conÂtrol, like the requireÂment of perÂmits to harÂvest their olives, while thouÂsands of olive trees and saplings in the West Bank have been uprooted and damÂaged by Israeli setÂtlers.
According to IOC figÂures, 24,500 tons of olive oil were proÂduced in Palestine durÂing the 2014/15 crop year, with 6,500 tons exported to other counÂtries.
