Independent young peoÂple and retirees saw the largest increases in conÂsumpÂtion, while indeÂpenÂdent adults were the only group to expeÂriÂence a decrease.
Extra virÂgin olive oil conÂsumpÂtion in Spain grew by more than 13 perÂcent from 2018 to 2019, accordÂing to a newly pubÂlished report from the counÂtry’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries.
Spaniards conÂsumed more than 138 milÂlion liters of extra virÂgin olive oil in 2019, putting per capita conÂsumpÂtion at about three liters, up nearly half a liter comÂpared with 2018.
Independent young peoÂple and retirees were the two demoÂgraphic groups that expeÂriÂenced the largest increases in conÂsumpÂtions, at 23.2 perÂcent and 21.3 perÂcent, respecÂtively. Independent adults were the only demoÂgraphic group that expeÂriÂenced a decrease in extra virÂgin olive oil conÂsumpÂtion.
According to the report, extra virÂgin olive oil accounted for slightly more than 25 perÂcent of the total volÂume of ediÂble oils conÂsumed in Spain in 2019.
Among the reaÂsons for the increase in conÂsumpÂtion are the perÂsisÂtently low olive oil prices in the counÂtry. From 2018 to 2019, the averÂage price for a liter of extra virÂgin olive oil fell by nearly 17 perÂcent.
The report also found that overÂall olive oil conÂsumpÂtion increased by 3.3 perÂcent, reachÂing about 356 milÂlion liters.
In 2018, the minÂistry reported that olive oil conÂsumpÂtion grew by 3.5 perÂcent, the largest such increase in a decade. The latÂest findÂings demonÂstrates that demand conÂtinÂues to trend upward in the world’s largest proÂducer and conÂsumer of olive oil.
While the counÂtry’s appetite for olive oil grows, the minÂistry’s data showed that table olive conÂsumpÂtion had expeÂriÂenced a slight decrease in 2019, falling by nearly three perÂcent to 112 milÂlion kiloÂgrams (247 milÂlion pounds).
