Egypt's membership in the International Olive Council was revoked in 2017 after it failed to sign an agreement on changes to standards of olive cultivation, production and trading.
Egypt’s House of Representatives approved a presÂiÂdenÂtial decree to join the International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives, entiÂtling Egypt to full memÂberÂship in the International Olive Council once the instruÂment of ratÂiÂfiÂcaÂtion is deposited with the United Nations. The agreeÂment will benÂeÂfit Egypt’s olive culÂtiÂvaÂtion indusÂtry and econÂomy, with the counÂtry’s olive oil proÂducÂtion increasÂing by 21 perÂcent in 2017 folÂlowÂing the curÂrency flotaÂtion iniÂtiaÂtive.
Egypt’s House of Representatives has approved a presÂiÂdenÂtial decree on joinÂing the International Agreement on Olive Oil and Table Olives. The presÂiÂdenÂtial decree (no.560/2017) which was signed in Cairo on January 8 will entiÂtle Egypt to full memÂberÂship in the International Olive Council (IOC) once the govÂernÂment has deposited the instruÂment of ratÂiÂfiÂcaÂtion with the United Nations in New York.
Egypt first joined the IOC in 1964 but in 2017 its memÂberÂship was revoked after it failed to sign an agreeÂment on changes to stanÂdards of olive culÂtiÂvaÂtion, proÂducÂtion and tradÂing.
Under the agreeÂment, Egypt will benÂeÂfit from finanÂcial grants to supÂport the country’s olive culÂtiÂvaÂtion, includÂing a new iniÂtiaÂtive to plant one milÂlion olive trees as part of a project aimed at culÂtiÂvatÂing 1.5 milÂlion trees in the Western Desert.
The Egyptian olive oil indusÂtry has grown conÂsidÂerÂably in recent years and while some IOC memÂbers saw a drop in olive oil proÂducÂtion in 2017, Egypt’s proÂducÂtion increased by 21 perÂcent. Demand for Egyptian olive oil also rose folÂlowÂing the country’s curÂrency flotaÂtion; an iniÂtiaÂtive which aimed to stimÂuÂlate the country’s econÂomy. The flotaÂtion gave proÂducÂers greater export opporÂtuÂniÂties and helped to secure a $12 bilÂlion loan from the International Monetary Fund.
Hishem el Hossary, underÂsecÂreÂtary of the comÂmitÂtee of agriÂculÂture, irriÂgaÂtion, food secuÂrity and aniÂmal health comÂmented on the Egyptian government’s webÂsite that being a memÂber of the International Olive Council had benÂeÂfited Egypt’s agriÂculÂtural and olive oil indusÂtry and the overÂall econÂomy, and led to the improveÂment of the physÂiÂcal and chemÂiÂcal propÂerÂties of Egyptian olive oil.
In April 2017 Palestine became the latÂest counÂtry to sign the IOC agreeÂment joinÂing Argentina, Algeria, European Union, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Montenegro, Palestine, Tunisia, Turkey and Uruguay.
The curÂrent IOC agreeÂment was re-drafted by the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in Switzerland in 2015. It came into effect in January 2017 and is valid till December 2026. The new agreeÂment was modÂiÂfied, conÂdensed and made simÂpler to encourÂage more counÂtries to join the IOC. The origÂiÂnal agreeÂment was set up in 1955 and was revised in 1963, 1979, 1986 and 2005.
The IOC aims to improve the chemÂiÂcal propÂerÂties of olive oil, perÂfect proÂducÂtion and improve harÂvestÂing techÂniques. It also proÂvides techÂniÂcal assisÂtance on export projects in order to overÂcome obstaÂcles to interÂnaÂtional trade.
