Southern Hemisphere olive harvest comes into focus

OOT Staff reporting from New York

The 2026 Southern Hemisphere olive harvest unfolded from roughly March through July across a geographically diverse group of producing countries, including Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, South Africa and Australia. Fresh oils from the season are now reaching the market, with the harvest providing an important counter-seasonal supply of newly produced extra virgin olive oil as Northern Hemisphere stocks age.

Conditions varied considerably by region, reflecting the Southern Hemisphere’s mix of Mediterranean, arid, subtropical and temperate growing environments. That diversity is increasingly a defining feature of Southern Hemisphere production, particularly in South America, where olive cultivation has expanded beyond the crop’s traditional climatic range.

The 2026 NYIOOC World Olive Oil Competition – Southern Hemisphere Edition has begun, with expert tasters now assessing extra virgin olive oils from producers across Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Brazil, South Africa, Australia and other Southern Hemisphere growing regions.

As entries are certified, results are published in the Official Guide to the World’s Best Olive Oils and incorporated into the Olive Oil Times World Ranking. Awards can also be followed as they are announced through the NYIOOC Live Results Tracker.

Widely regarded as the leading international competition for olive oil quality, the NYIOOC gives producers an independent measure of their work while connecting award-winning brands with buyers, chefs, retailers and consumers around the world. Its annual results have also become an important reference for consumers seeking independently recognized extra virgin olive oils.
