The results of the 2016 New York International Olive Oil Competition were announced at a packed press conference this evening.
Curtis Cord announced the best olive oils for 2016 at the NYIOOC in New York City, with Italy, Spain, and the United States takÂing the top spots. The event also introÂduced a new Olive Oil Sommelier Certification Program and a Best New Olive Oils Marketplace to help proÂmote and sell the winÂning oils to a larger audiÂence.
Curtis Cord, presÂiÂdent of the New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC), announced the best olive oils in the world for 2016 at a press conÂferÂence packed with over 200 olive oil proÂducÂers retailÂers, disÂtribÂuÂtors, chefs and jourÂnalÂists from around the world in New York City this evening.
The crowded audiÂence was abuzz with anticÂiÂpaÂtion, nerves and exciteÂment. One proÂducer said she was nearly in tears. “My boss told me not to come home unless I win,” she said. Viewers from around the world, who watched the live-streamed broadÂcast online, joined the New York crowd, waitÂing for the results.
Cord was flanked by the NYIOOC panel of judges, comÂprised of 15 top tasters from every region of the globe, and led by Carola DĂĽmmer Medina, Fernando MartĂnez Román, and Konstantinos Liris. After meticÂuÂlously tastÂing and evalÂuÂatÂing over 820 oils from 26 counÂtries — the largest interÂnaÂtional colÂlecÂtion of olive oils ever assemÂbled — over four intense days, the winÂners were decided. At 6:00 pm EDT on April 14, the news was revealed to the world.
“Making high-qualÂity extra virÂgin olive oil has always been a demandÂing task,” Cord told the audiÂence. “Past sucÂcesses do not guarÂanÂtee that proÂducÂers will craft a winÂning oil this time.”
“Unlike wine,” Cord said, “an excelÂlent vinÂtage for extra virÂgin olive oil lasts but one year, with each new seaÂson forcÂing farmÂers and millers to earn their metÂtle again, to face a new set of chalÂlenges in their quest to proÂduce a juice withÂout defects, and capÂture the fleetÂing qualÂiÂties of healthy fruit.”
Despite the many chalÂlenges, 314 proÂducÂers took home awards, an overÂall sucÂcess rate of 38 perÂcent. Italy won 109 awards, overÂtakÂing last year’s top winÂner, Spain, who racked up 78 wins, a strong secÂond. The United States came in third place with 50.
Portugal and Greece tied for fourth place, with 20 awards each. 180 Greek brands subÂmitÂted olive oils this year, and only 11 perÂcent placed in the comÂpeÂtiÂtion, a showÂing that will “no doubt lead many to take a hard look at their proÂducÂtion processes,” accordÂing to Cord. New Zealand and Australia fared well, winÂning about half of their entries. 9 of 16 Croatian brands took home awards.
Cord introÂduced Dorothy Cann Hamilton, founder and CEO of the International Culinary Center, and announced a new iniÂtiaÂtive there. The forthÂcomÂing Olive Oil Sommelier Certification Program will bring the world’s foreÂmost olive oil experts and eduÂcaÂtors to New York for a comÂpreÂhenÂsive series of courses on olive oil proÂducÂtion, qualÂity manÂageÂment and senÂsory analyÂsis. “I want to conÂgratÂuÂlate everyÂone who is here today,” Hamilton said. “You are the pioÂneerÂing group for olive oil, which is going to take on the world. This is a growÂing moveÂment and this is just the beginÂning.”
As winÂners ascended the stage to colÂlect their sleek NYIOOC troÂphies, lively chatÂter, enthuÂsiÂasÂtic applause and the occaÂsional cheer erupted in the capÂtiÂvated crowd. (The nerÂvous proÂducer took home an award, so she can breathe easy, as can her boss.)
In the four years since the NYIOOC began, the winÂning olive oils have proven to be highly valÂued by chefs, food buyÂers and disÂcernÂing conÂsumers everyÂwhere who seek the very highÂest qualÂity in extra virÂgin olive oil. The NYIOOC has always “aspired not only to idenÂtify the word’s best olive oils, but to develop innoÂvÂaÂtive ways to get them into kitchens where they rightÂfully deserve to be,” Cord said.
All of New York International Olive Oil Competition winÂners are preÂsented on the webÂsite bestoliveoils.org. For the first time, the Best New Olive Oils Marketplace, which is set to launch in the upcomÂing weeks, will allow enthuÂsiÂasts to buy the winÂning oils on the same webÂsite. “We will help sellÂers of these high-qualÂity prodÂucts reach a much larger audiÂence — and that lies at the very heart of our misÂsion,” said Cord.
