The International Olive Council preÂsented the 14th ediÂtion of the Mario Solinas Quality Awards for extra virÂgin olive oils, with Spain and Portugal domÂiÂnatÂing the winÂners in all four catÂeÂgories. The International Olive Council (IOC) recently preÂsented the 14th ediÂtion of the Mario Solinas Quality Awards for extra virÂgin olive oils.

Named after the late proÂfesÂsor Mario Solinas of Italy, the awards recÂogÂnize extra virÂgin olive oils with the best organolepÂtic charÂacÂterÂisÂtics in four catÂeÂgories: intense, medium and mild green fruitiÂness and ripe fruitiÂness. 138 oils comÂpeted for this year’s awards repÂreÂsentÂing 12 counÂtries: Algeria (1), Chile (2), Germany (1), Greece (6), Iran (2), Israel (1), Italy (2), Portugal (38), Spain (75), Tunisia (6), Turkey (3) and Uruguay (1).
Producers from Spain and Portugal swept the first, secÂond and third prizes in all four catÂeÂgories. First prizes went to Finca La Torre of Spain (intense green fruitiÂness); Casa AgrÃcola Roboredo Madeira of Portugal (medium green fruitiÂness); Sociedade AgrÃcola Vale de Ouro of Portugal (mild green fruitiÂness); and Hacienda Queiles of Spain (ripe fruitiÂness).
Spain had fared well in preÂviÂous comÂpeÂtiÂtions, takÂing home three first prizes in both 2012 and 2013. In 2013 Spanish proÂducÂers took home all but one of the nine awards. Italian proÂducÂers conÂtinue to largely stay away from the comÂpeÂtiÂtion.
The Mario Solinas Quality Awards were preÂsented at the 22nd extraÂorÂdiÂnary sesÂsion of the IOC Council of Members in Madrid. During his openÂing speech, IOC Executive Director Jean-Louis Barjol announced some imporÂtant changes regardÂing the comÂpeÂtiÂtion: first, that next year will feaÂture two ediÂtions of the Mario Solinas awards in order to facilÂiÂtate parÂticÂiÂpaÂtion from proÂducÂers in the Southern Hemisphere; and secÂond, that the next awards cerÂeÂmony will be held at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York City in July 2015.
