With the harvest season is at its peak, Greek olive oil producers are nagged by cases of crop and oil piracy.
During the olive harÂvestÂing seaÂson in rural Greece, cases of theft of olives and olive oil have been reported in varÂiÂous areas, includÂing thefts of table olives, olive oil, and equipÂment. The regional adminÂisÂtraÂtion in Central Greece has issued a warnÂing to mill ownÂers and olive oil merÂchants to be cauÂtious durÂing transÂacÂtions to preÂvent furÂther inciÂdents.
It is this time of the year that if you find yourÂself roamÂing the areas of rural Greece, you will most likely come across workÂers harÂvestÂing olives in the olive groves, tracÂtors and pickup trucks loaded with sacks of olives conÂtinÂuÂously movÂing back and forth between the groves and the oil mills, and olive oil proÂducÂers flockÂing to the mills disÂcussing yield and prices.
The harÂvestÂing seaÂson is at its peak, but not withÂout its usual chalÂlenges. Now, reports are comÂing in from varÂiÂous areas of the counÂtry where cases of theft of olives and freshly made olive oil have occurred.
A few days ago near Messolongi, thieves took eight tons of table olives that were kept by local proÂducÂers in a wareÂhouse facilÂity. According to the police, they probÂaÂbly loaded the olives on trucks and drove off. No folÂlow-up on the case has made the news yet, despite the volÂume of the stolen crop.
Last month in the Chalkidiki region in northÂern Greece, police arrested six peoÂple accused of tresÂpassÂing and harÂvestÂing olives from groves that belonged to othÂers. They had allegedly comÂmitÂted the same offense again just days ago in the same area, and had already transÂferred the loot of more than two tons of olives to a mill for proÂcessÂing.
An elder proÂducer livÂing near Heraklion in Crete disÂcovÂered that his yield of half-ton of olive oil was missÂing from his house. He lost not only the oil meant for his own houseÂhold use but also the income he would have made by sellÂing the surÂplus to his neighÂbors, he told the authorÂiÂties.
In another cirÂcumÂstance, perÂpeÂtraÂtors invaded a barn at a vilÂlage near Agrinio in the Aetolia-Acarnania region and removed conÂtainÂers with 2 tons of table olives valÂued at more than €4,000 ($4,739).
In Central Greece, the regional adminÂisÂtraÂtion, in an attempt to preÂvent simÂiÂlar sitÂuÂaÂtions, issued a warnÂing to mill ownÂers and olive oil merÂchants to be cauÂtious when dealÂing with unfaÂmilÂiar peoÂple and inform the police of anyÂthing susÂpiÂcious durÂing their transÂacÂtions.
And in sevÂeral cases thieves also took equipÂment and machinÂery like tarps, ladÂders, chainÂsaws, and elecÂtric harÂvesters that workÂers left unatÂtended at the field for the next day’s harÂvest.
Such inciÂdents come up every year durÂing the harÂvestÂing seaÂson and even more so durÂing chalÂlengÂing ecoÂnomic times and periÂods of higher unemÂployÂment.
