Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food reported that olive oil production in Spain reached 1.77 million tons through March of the 2018/19 campaign, an increase of 43 percent compared with the same period in the previous campaign.
Spain’s olive oil proÂducÂtion for the first half of the 2018/19 camÂpaign reached a record 1.77 milÂlion tons, markÂing a 43 perÂcent increase from the preÂviÂous year and 49 perÂcent higher than the averÂage of the last four camÂpaigns. Despite conÂcerns about potenÂtial tarÂiffs on European Union olive oil exports to the United States, Spain has seen an 18 perÂcent increase in domesÂtic and interÂnaÂtional sales, with averÂage monthly sales reachÂing 125,550 tons for the first half of the year.
Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fishing and Food has reported that olive oil proÂducÂtion reached 1.77 milÂlion tons for the first half of the 2018/19 camÂpaign — a record figÂure.
This marks a 43 perÂcent increase for the same period in 2017/18 and 49 perÂcent higher than the averÂage yields of the last four camÂpaigns.
The 2018/19 camÂpaign has been proÂlific in Spain in other aspects as well.

Provisional data for March also estiÂmated that 485,400 tons of olive oil have already been exported, a 24 perÂcent increase over last year. March alone had a very posÂiÂtive perÂforÂmance as exports were 50 perÂcent greater than those of March 2018.
However, the potenÂtial for tarÂiffs on European Union olive oil exports to the United States could dampen these figÂures movÂing forÂward. Last year, Spain exported 35,323 tons of olive oil to the U.S. and many in the secÂtor were hopÂing to increase this marÂket share in light of poor harÂvests in other comÂpetiÂtor counÂtries.
On the domesÂtic front, Spanish olive oil proÂducÂers increased their sales, havÂing sold 267,960 tons, which repÂreÂsents a nine perÂcent increase over last year’s figÂures and is three perÂcent higher than the averÂage of the past four years.
Average monthly sales for the domesÂtic marÂket have been 44,650 tons for the first half of the year. This good perÂforÂmance has led to many proÂducÂers sellÂing some of their stock, which they expect to increase by 48 perÂcent comÂpared with last year due to the good harÂvest.
Spain is expected to make up 75 perÂcent of the European Union’s olive proÂducÂtion and 50 perÂcent of the global proÂducÂtion this year, comÂpenÂsatÂing the decreases other top olive proÂducÂing counÂtries in the European Union expeÂriÂenced.
Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura were the top three proÂducÂing provinces in Spain.
Recently, the European Commission expressed its conÂcern for the sigÂnifÂiÂcant decrease of olive oil prices despite a rather staÂble proÂducÂtion for the 2018/19 olive camÂpaign. Due to this, the Commission will monÂiÂtor the prices of olive oil in Spain and other memÂber counÂtries.
Although prices in Spain are below averÂage interÂnaÂtional olive oil rates, they have remained rather staÂble in the last few weeks.
Production of table olives increased by four perÂcent in 2018/19 in comÂparÂiÂson to last year’s numÂbers, but have expeÂriÂenced a slight decrease in sales, due mostly to lower sales in the domesÂtic marÂket.
Total sales of table olives within Spain have gone down three perÂcent with respect to those of last year.
