The Mediterranean Diet Foundation in colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion with sevÂeral interÂnaÂtional health and nutriÂtion orgaÂniÂzaÂtions updated the traÂdiÂtional Mediterranean Diet pyraÂmid to reflect and adapt to today’s lifestyle.
While some eleÂments remained the same, there were new comÂpoÂnents added to this eatÂing plan in order to repÂreÂsent the Mediterranean lifestyle as a whole.
The pyraÂmid conÂtinÂues to proÂmote breads, grains, olive oil, fruits and vegÂetaÂbles as the basis of the diet, while red meat and sweets are at the tip of the pyraÂmid to be conÂsumed sparÂingly. However, in this verÂsion recÂomÂmended servÂings are included as well, proÂvidÂing the reader with a betÂter idea of how much to eat and not only what to eat.
The most interÂestÂing aspect of this new model is the fact that it includes sugÂgesÂtions regardÂing cookÂing, socialÂizÂing, use of seaÂsonal and local foods, activÂity, modÂerÂaÂtion and of course adeÂquate rest.
The pyraÂmid has been transÂlated in 10 lanÂguages that are spoÂken in the Mediterranean region and can be downÂloaded from the Mediterranean Diet Foundation webÂsite.
