Despite earlier predictions of a strong harvest, olive oil producers in Italy and most of Europe have revised their forecasts for the 2016 season sharply downward, while stocks from last year are keeping prices stable.
Italy douÂbled its olive oil proÂducÂtion in 2016 comÂpared to 2015, but unfaÂvorÂable weather conÂdiÂtions have caused a sigÂnifÂiÂcant decrease in proÂducÂtion estiÂmates for this year, with some farmÂers startÂing early harÂvest to preÂvent furÂther loss. Overall, Europe is expected to see a decrease in olive oil proÂducÂtion in 2016, with prices not expected to sigÂnifÂiÂcantly increase due to leftÂover stocks from the preÂviÂous seaÂson.
Last year Italy proÂduced 470,000 tons of olive oil, douÂbling the horÂrenÂdous 2015 outÂput of 220,000 tons, to again become the world’s secÂond-largest proÂducer after Spain. Not only was the 2015 yield more than satÂisÂfyÂing, the qualÂity was great too, thanks to perÂfect cliÂmatic conÂdiÂtions.
This year, good flowÂerÂing made most proÂducÂers optiÂmistic at first that the posÂiÂtive trend would conÂtinue, but a series of unfaÂvorÂable weather-related facÂtors over the last period made things worse and, under these conÂdiÂtions, it is now estiÂmated that proÂducÂtion will not exceed 250,000 tons.

Some farmÂers started harÂvest in mid-September to deal with the critÂiÂcal sitÂuÂaÂtion and preÂvent loss, since the olive fruit fly and other pathogens had already affected olive groves in many proÂducÂtion areas.
The next few weeks will be cruÂcial for those who are waitÂing for the right moment to start.
These chalÂlenges are partly due to the fact that there was virÂtuÂally no winÂter throughÂout Italy, espeÂcially in areas of the cenÂter and south.
Higher-than-averÂage temÂperÂaÂtures and humidÂity helped pathogens to develop, even in periÂods when bioÂlogÂiÂcal develÂopÂment would be norÂmally susÂpended. Despite other spoÂradic adverse weather conÂdiÂtions like hail, there was great conÂfiÂdence among the most of proÂducÂers until the period of fruit set, when they had to face secÂondary pests like Anthracnose, and onset of Lytta Vescicatoria (or Spanish fly). Moreover, Anthracnose became a major probÂlem when olive fly, durÂing egg-layÂing spread fungi to fruits.
Some areas have sufÂfered severe drought while in other regions heavy rains caused humidÂity and temÂperÂaÂtures below 30°C (86°F), which are ideal conÂdiÂtions for the develÂopÂment of fly that in some cases left up to 10 tracks on one olive, as reported by some farmÂers.
For those who had to face these chalÂlenges, treatÂment had litÂtle affect, espeÂcially in bioÂdyÂnamic and organic agriÂculÂture. In the case of conÂvenÂtional treatÂments and the use of prodÂucts with pre-harÂvest interÂval of 28 – 30 days, the effiÂcacy decreased when it rained.
In parÂticÂuÂlar, organic farmÂers started harÂvestÂing early in order to preÂvent furÂther attacks of the fly, but all proÂducÂers of the ​‘Boot’ stand at attenÂtion, even those who have had no probÂlems so far due to the posiÂtion of their olive groves or to the promptÂness and effecÂtiveÂness in applyÂing treatÂments.
Early and conÂstant monÂiÂtorÂing is essenÂtial. Farmers who started to superÂvise their plants from the beginÂning of spring, watchÂing for the occurÂrence of secÂondary disÂeases and applyÂing right treatÂments in time, are able to have betÂter results.
According to a study conÂducted by GEA Iberia in July, the foreÂcast indiÂcated a decrease of 8 perÂcent in world proÂducÂtion of olive oil for 2016 and it is estiÂmated that all Europe will sufÂfer a drop in proÂducÂtion.
In the same way as Italy, in Spain good expecÂtaÂtions have been subÂverted because of the heat and sumÂmer drought with proÂducÂtion now estiÂmated about 1.3 milÂlion tons.
A slump is also expected for Greece, while Portugal should reach an averÂage proÂducÂtion.
Elsewhere in the Mediterranean basin, a drop in proÂducÂtion is expected in Tunisia yet Turkey seems to be the only place that will regÂisÂter an increase. Nevertheless, accordÂing to operÂaÂtors in the secÂtor, prices will not sigÂnifÂiÂcantly increase thanks to leftÂover stocks from last seaÂson.
