Tunisia has become the secÂond largest proÂducer of olive oil after Spain, with proÂducÂtion increasÂing fourÂfold to 280,000 to 300,000 tons this year. Despite Spain remainÂing in first place with 600,000 tons, Tunisia has expeÂriÂenced a record olive seaÂson and is a major exporter of olive oil to the EU and other marÂkets worldÂwide.
Olive oil proÂducÂtion in Tunisia has increased fourÂfold, makÂing it the secÂond largest proÂducer after Spain.
This is the first time Tunisia comes in secÂond place in olive oil proÂducÂtion figÂures, with this year’s yields estiÂmated at 280,000 to 300,000 tons, a 400 perÂcent increase from last year’s figÂure of 70,000 tons.
Spain’s proÂducÂtion has been estiÂmated at 600,000 tons, putting it in first place again despite its poor olive harÂvest. While many European olive proÂducÂers in Italy and Spain have expeÂriÂenced an excepÂtionÂally bad harÂvest because of poor weather and olive fly infesÂtaÂtions, Tunisia has had a record olive seaÂson.

There has also been a bumper harÂvest in citÂrus fruits and dates in Tunisia this year and the cereal crop has expeÂriÂenced an 80 perÂcent increase in yields.
Though Tunisia is a major olive oil proÂducer, only a small perÂcentÂage of it is conÂsumed at home where olive oil is being replaced by other vegÂetable oils in the traÂdiÂtional Tunisian diet.
Between 60 and 70 perÂcent of Tunisia’s olive oil is exported to the EU, namely Spain and Italy. Tunisian olive oil is also exported to over 60 marÂkets around the world includÂing the US, Canada, France, Russia, China and a few Arab counÂtries under as many as 80 difÂferÂent brand names.
Tunisia’s olive oil exports repÂreÂsent 40 perÂcent of its agriÂculÂtural exports and 10 perÂcent of total exports.
